So the internet is blowing up today because of the news that Against Me!’s singer , formerly known as Tom Gabel,  has declared that she will be beginning treatment to change genders. Tom will now be known as Laura Jane Grace. 

This is great news. The fact that Laura can be strong enough to speak out and take action in this way is an incredible thing. However, the way the blogosphere is reacting is making me incredibly angry. A lot of sites are fucking up gender pronouns which is a sign of either ignorance, or refusal to comply to the way it should be reported on. Secondly, music fans are being idiots. A lot of people, who claim to be fans of the band, are making incredibly nasty and ignorant comments in reference to the issue. One commenter on Stereogum that I saw earlier today accused people of being “too PC about the issue” and said that he shouldn’t be “expected to accept transgenders”  to “feel enlightened.” No you should do it because you’re supposedly a human being. People make me sick. Also, that Stereogum article is incredibly unprofessional, and doesn’t seem to take the issue seriously. Classless music writing.

On TMZ I found this comment:

“His poor kid and wife. What an ass. If that’s what he wanted to do he should have never gotten married and had a kid. It is despicable to do that to someone. I hope she leaves his ass and takes the kid before he totally screws her up.”

^ That’s in the running for most ignorant thing I’ve read this month.  Parenting has nothing to do with what gender you identify with. Obviously this commenter would be an awful parent considering how horribly ignorant they are.

It must be incredible for someone struggling with this issue to now have Laura to look up to. THis is incredible. Another great story is the way in which Laura’s wife has accepted this and plans to stay with her. That’s a really beautiful sentiment. Testament to the fact that love has no gender. 

This is an awesome day for music, and should be celebrated.  As a fan of this woman and band, I’m so proud. 

Now I wanna go out to the bar and dance after hearing this.
